Our Current Adventure
In Search Of The Mother Road
We are on a quest to rediscover Americana. Route 66, The Mother Road, connected Chicago (Joliet) Illinois with the West Coast of the U.S., Santa Monica, California. As super highways gained popularity, Route 66 has been slowly disappearing. Our plan is to spend the Summer of 2015, about 7 months, to travel as much of Route 66 as we can still find. With plentiful sidetrips we plan to go White Water Rafting, visit the Bonneville Salt Flats, Reno for “Hot August Nights”, the Grand Canyon, Explore Las Vegas, sidetrip up into Colorado and hopefully have some wonderful adventures.
As we chronicle our adventures, simply check this page and the latest blog posts will be added below. Feel free to post comments but please keep it clean, our grandkids read this. Thank You!

We pulled away from Pontiac, Illinois, tired from our day of exploring and a bit overloaded with our heads full of wall murals and cool nostalgia items from the various museums we toured. Finding our way back onto Route 66, the discussion was lively and enthusiastic as we worked from Route 66 road sign to road sign. Turn here, oh look at that, sign says straight through and so on. The cruise control was set at 55 and we were LTD (Living The Dream). I must admit that we weren’t micro-focused, you know like if you were in a big city or...

Kinda funny how life works sometimes. We are so busy most of the time that we get consumed with things to make our life easier so we can become more efficient, we do more in less time, we find ways to streamline the process. Instant email, texts, in-vehicle navigation, express routes to save a few minutes, bluetooth, Siri, Google Maps … I’m getting dizzy. I’m concerned with all our modern conveniences to make our lives “easier” and more productive that we’ve become so focused and wound tight, if we ever...

After our Grand Haven experience we spent some time in Monticello, Indiana with great friends. We had spent the winter together at an RV Resort in Crystal River, Florida, so it hadn’t been that long since we’d seen each other. Our friends were also former Navy and P-3 folks who were stationed at Brunswick, Maine Naval Air Station during the same period of time that we were there. We had an awesome time boating on their lake and experiencing all the great eating establishments in Monticello. Evenings we sat up around their...

As we sat at the sidewalk cafe, we saw the new Land Rovers, Porsche’s and BMW’s cruising the main street of town while the sidewalks plied with fashion conscious 20 and 30 something hipsters on their cellphones. On the street corner played Joe, a violin player sharing his repertoire of everything from classical to country to gypsy music for tips. It had been at least 25 years since we last visited Grand Haven, Michigan. We had just completed our trip to Holland, Michigan to see family and thought we’d head to one of our old...

Everything Changes! After our visit in Maggie Valley we headed north to Holland, Michigan. We grew up in Holland and that is where I met my soul mate. She was a Dutch Dancer in the annual Tulip Time parade and I lived on the north side of Holland on Lake Macatawa and worked at the local marina during the summer vacations from High School. She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. We became High School sweethearts and the rest, as they say, is history. We married when we were still very young. I was 18 and she was 17 and...

After the baptism and a day of family time, we packed it up and headed out to Maggie Valley, NC to visit with friends. The plan was that the guys would go “Mountain Golfing” and the gals would go to Biltmore Estates for the day. We found a little RV Park on the Pigeon River. This park was quiant with about 10-15 sites and only 4 or 5 RV’s in the park. When we arrived, I walked across the little driveway to the river where I saw a fly fisherman plying his craft pursuing rainbow trout. What a welcome that was. Mountain...

As we stood at the grave site, it was hard to believe that just 3 days ago we pulled out of Crystal River, Florida headed out to begin our Route 66 adventure. We got the phonecall about 30 minutes after we hit the road, my daughter-in-law was on the other end of the call and said we needed to come to the hospital where her father had just had open heart surgery 3 days before. Husband, father, grandfather and our friend had taken a turn for the worse and was not expected to make it another day. We made it to the hospital only 10...
